SIGN THE PETITION: #FairFares for Low-Income New Yorkers

Dear Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito:

We write to you to ask that you establish a program that would allow low-income New Yorkers to purchase MetroCards at reduced rates. That program, "Fair Fares," would allow adults in New York City at or below the federal poverty line to purchase MetroCards at a discount price. A new report from the Community Service Society of New York (CSS) found that 1 in 4 low-income New Yorkers cannot afford to use public transportation, limiting their opportunities to get good jobs and affordable housing and, in many cases, forcing them to choose between transit and other necessities.

No one should have to choose between a meal and a MetroCard. We ask New York City to implement a program that would help almost 800,000 riders get to work, school, see their families, and take advantage of all the opportunities New York City has to offer.
